Two new associated members, COMET and Intertek, have entered the unique partnership where the residue in one company becomes a resource in another.
Michael Hallgren, senior vice president of Novo Nordisk Kalundborg and chairman of Kalundborg Symbiosis says:
“With the two new associated members we add new perspectives and opportunities to the symbiosis and the current partners. As a food ingredient manufacturer, COMET is a strong match to the symbiosis, and their partnership with Meliora Bio, that is also a symbiosis partner, is a kind of symbiosis-in-the symbiosis. Intertek is an important knowledge partner in the area, which can introduce new green technologies to the industries, ultimately leading to development of new symbiosis streams”.
Two new partners
COMET is building a full-scale plant in Kalundborg in a close collaboration with Meliora Bio. In Kalundborg, COMET’s line of Arrabina arabinoxylan prebiotics are produced from hemicellulose from Meliora Bio, a residue from the production of bioethanol. 4 million kilos of Arrabina prebiotics will be produced per year at the factory in Kalundborg and will be sold to food/beverage/supplement companies looking to strengthen nutritional labels and digestive health claims.
”COMET’s strong commitment to producing innovative, healthy and sustainable products makes us a natural fit to join Kalundborg Symbiosis. Our investment and presence in the area supports Meliora Bio’s operation by upgrading a co-product into a high value food ingredient” says Rich Troyer, CEO at COMET.
Intertek has been in Kalundborg since 1974 and is a part of a global organization Intertek Group Plc. Intertek is a Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide and provide a systemic approach to supporting customers’ Quality Assurance efforts in each of the areas of their operations including R&D, raw materials sourcing, components suppliers, manufacturing, transportation, distribution and retail channels, and consumer management. Testing services are delivered at the laboratory in Kalundborg on 24/7 basis where 15 chemists are employed, performing more than 100.000 analysis on annual basis.
“We want to be an active part of the innovation of the industrial symbiosis in Kalundborg, bringing our international and local experiences to the table. We have a strong tradition for entering partnerships for technology development, which can be transformed to new business areas like PtX, green fuels or pyrolysis. Our knowledge can contribute to building up capacity on both full scale as well as test and demo facilities in the future”, says Brian Qvist Jacobsen, Operation & Sales Manager, Intertek and continues: “Intertek has a strong local commitment and CSR profile, working together with not less than two socio-economic entrepreneurs, which can contribute to the Kalundborg Symbiosis´ frame agreement and serve as a best practice example to follow. We will be happy to share our know-how, network, and experiences with the partners in Kalundborg Symbiosis and hope to join the world leading partnership”.
Even though Remilk left the symbiosis earlier this year, the association is bigger than ever, and now counts 16 active members, working closely together to optimize resource consumption.
